Cocktail Party

Standing, sipping and small bites that carry the evening

Plan a cocktail party at home with a menu of make-ahead bites, one or two batched cocktails and a zero-proof drink that feels just as considered. Get bite and drink counts per hour, a setup that keeps the room moving, and a timeline that has you out of the kitchen when the doorbell rings.

Questions hosts ask

How many appetisers per person for a cocktail party?

As a rule of thumb, plan four to six bites per guest per hour for the first two hours if dinner follows. If the party replaces dinner, plan ten to twelve pieces a head in total, including something filling.

How many drinks per person?

The common catering rule is two drinks per guest in the first hour and one an hour after. For a three-hour party that is up to four a head, split across cocktails, wine and a zero-proof option.

Do I need a bartender?

Event staffing guidance puts one bartender at about 50 guests for cocktails. For a smaller home party, batching drinks ahead means a friend can top up glasses instead.

How much ice for a cocktail party?

Plan roughly 1 to 1.5 lb of ice per guest for serving, plus extra if you are chilling bottles or shaking cocktails.

How much space do I need?

For a standing party, allow about 7.5 sq ft (0.7 m²) per guest, plus room for the bar and food surfaces.
